.The Artist Frame Shop
The Frame Building Shop, is about helping artists build affordable floater frames for their own artwork with hands-on building experiences, in a friendly supportive fun small group environment.
In our workshops, you'll learn how to build, assemble, finish, and fit your art into the frames. We'll guide you through process, from cutting and assembly to installing your artwork, so you leave with both finished frames and the confidence to make more in the future.
Pop-Up Workshop
The Artist Frame Shop is a pop-up workshop, which means we bring the shop to a suitable space rather than operating from a permanent space. The plan is to hold collaborative pop-up workshop gigs with artist studios, in community or residential spaces, and with artist co-op groups, on a shoestring budget, and pass on the savings to staving artists.
If you have access to a space inside or outside where we can set up for a day or a weekend, we'd love to hear from you. All we need is enough room for our portable equipment, a couple of work tables, and it fits a small group of artists to build frames.
This pop-up model makes self-frame building doable and affordable, while creating a fun hands-on experience that we can enjoy together.
Materials & Pricing:
We keep the pricing affordable and simple:
$15 per frame up to 24 inches square.
$3 per linear foot for frame material used.
Financially pressed student artists, reach out, and let's see if we can find other options to make it work for you.
Materials & Finishes:
The floating frames are made from maple, a durable hardwood that's easy to work with and takes a finish nicely. You can choose the look that best complements your artwork, but we only have clear coat finish and Satin black paint at the workshops. Other paint colors and all stain colors are down to you to source.
Natural clear coat - ( works lovely with the maple frames, easy to apply)
Painted finish - (works well, its a three coat process, but very doable)
Stained colors ( a horse of a different color, can be difficult to work with)
We provide the maple frame material ,the tools, specialty jigs for cutting and assembling your frames - you simply bring your artwork or artwork dimensions and a willingness to learn.
More then just a Workshop
This isn't just about building frames. It's a chance to spend time with other artists, learn new skills, and make something with your own hands, and have fun and "a wee digital detox".
We work together, share ideas, and try to have a good time while we're at it. Building your own frames takes a little practice, but it quickly becomes a satisfying part of the creative process. The result is a good-looking basic floater frame to hang or present your work.

This vid shows that cutting your pre-made frame stock on the frame sled is a simple, consistent, and time-efficient way to cut the four sides for your floater frames without using a measuring tape.
It’s possible to build several frames in one workshop. We encourage small building groups coming together and sharing the work load and frame building process. This makes a lot of sense, because some people are more comfortable using power tools, while others might be great at putting the frame together and doing the finish. The workshop is meant to be chill and fun, it has some rough edges that permanent set up workshops don't, but it works.
We are not pretending to be a professional frame shop; they provide great service. We intend to support artists who truly can't afford access to good-quality frames by providing the apparatus to build their own self-made frames to showcase their work.
